“I hope the current leadership approves it already,” he said in a text message when asked if he would urge the House rules committee, chaired by the majority leader in the House and the representative of the 1st district of Leyte, Martin Romualdez, to schedule the measure for plenary debate and approval.

In February this year, the House Committee on Population and Family Relations approved the measure to legalize absolute divorce in the country.

Alvarez has said he will “officially” ask Velasco to include the absolute divorce bill on the lower house’s list of legislative priorities.

He said he will try to push for the adoption of the measure this year.

“Better to hope,” said the former president who drafted HB No. 2263, the Absolute Divorce and Marriage Dissolution Bill in the Philippines.

He recalled that during the 17th Congress, the measure blocked the House of Representatives at third and last reading. It went to the Senate, but it failed, Alvarez said.

“This option, as a last resort, should be simple, affordable and accessible to people who find themselves in an irreparably toxic relationship that harms husbands, wives, their children and destroys peace, harmony and family health, ”Alvarez said.
