The Mahila court in Madurai convicted and sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife in 2016. The court also sentenced his accomplice to life imprisonment. Another defendant in the case died while awaiting trial.

Trial Judge Kirubakaran Mathuram sentenced the main defendants K. Mohandass and K. Shanmugam to life imprisonment. The court also imposed a total fine of ₹50,000 and ₹20,000 each on the two men.

Mohandass married Chithra in 2001. The couple had three children. After their marriage, they lived in Chennai. However, due to differences of opinion, Chithra returned to Madurai and she also filed a petition in Madurai Family Court to seek divorce.

She had obtained an interim maintenance order. Angered by this, Mohandass threatened her and asked her to withdraw the petition. However, Chithra refused to withdraw the divorce petition. He then conspired with two other men to assassinate her.

Mohandass, who ran a travel business, hired his driver and a friend of the driver to assassinate Chithra. Driver Shanmugan and his friend P. Ganesan were hired by Mohandass to carry out the plot.

After Chitra returned home from the court hearing, she was intercepted near her home by the duo who doused her with gasoline and set her on fire. They then fled. She was rushed to Rajaji Government Hospital but succumbed to her burns. The SS colony police registered a case.
